September 16th: A Beautiful Day for a Birthday!

Good things come in small packages...
Of course, the packaging itself was almost as much fun as the presents inside. The red hot baby grand piano from Aunt Barbara, Uncle Mike, and Cousin Bryce was a huge hit. Books are always a treat for E! And then Great-Grandma and Great-Grandpa Bush hit a homerun with the Storybook Rhymes--Elsie quickly figured out how to push the buttons and play music. David is convinced the baby prodigy will be composing a concerto in no time.

Special Grand-Guests for the 1st Birthday!
She says, "Let them eat cake!"

Happy Birthday Elsie!
On Saturday, September 15th, friends and family gathered for picnic fare to celebrate Elsie's 1st birthday. In honor of her favorite book, Ten Little Ladybugs, the invitations, Addie's smocked dress, the cake, and favors were in keeping with the theme--you'll see that Elsie's friend Taylor obliged! The celebrations continued well into the night--in spite of ND's trouncing and up to Bama's last minute win!

E's Life List

Most serious birders compile a life list. Elsie is well on her way. After hearing of her excitement with the bird feeder at Hilton Head, Elaine bought E a bird feeder for outside the breakfast room at home. Elsie sits in her high chair pointing and calling to all the birds who happen by. Her parents have engaged in remedial bird identification sessions with books and internet searches: David can now be found calling out "Look at the tufted titmouse" over his morning coffee. For her birthday, Renee and Tom bought Elsie the Audubon blue jay you see in the pictures here. She diligently studied the attached guide and then marked the rest of the Audubon collection as "must haves." E then demanded the tweeter be activated over and over and over again... Ahhh baby's first hobby....
Baby's Got a New Pair of Shoes

We knew she was special. This was confirmed when we went to buy Elsie her first pair of shoes: she has a shallow heel, a high bridge, and a monkey toe. (If you have seen her parents' feet, this comes as no surprise!) Once diagnosed, we left Striderite $50 poorer with these snazzy walking shoes for E's special little feet. And boy, do they give us 'tude: we walk and stomp and even 'tep on things so the family story goes.
A Girl and her Pug

In the first pic, you see the nug and her pug, BFFs. Now in the next two, the pug is barely visible. That's because he is on the other side of a locked door. Elsie is trying to let him in, and then when the door is locked, she tries using the key. Before too long, she and the pug will be sneaking out like experts...

By the way....

And did I mention that E is walking? Boy, is she walking! It started right around her 11 month mark and it was a few steps here, a long stand there, and then every day more and more steps and then baby steps and then big steps and high steps and fast steps and on and on and everywhere. So we like to be chased and sometimes we like to chase. We have skinned knees. Our bum is sore from the requisite falls. And we think it is very very funny and walking makes us giggle!

Along with the walking, out tumbled the words. The first one was "uh oh" quite a while back and then "da da da" for lots of things including dad. And then "oca" for Oscar and "oo oo" for birds and "ahhh" after drinking and "nonay" for Elaine. Many of these are emphasized with pointing her little fat pointer finger (a trick learned from Lucy's visit we believe). There are words she knows and doesn't say: ball, car, Mr. Stripes. She can find these toys if you ask for them. Yesterday's word was a combo word for on and off: "Owp." When she wants to flip the light switch on and off, she says "owp" and points.

Of course, these are all action shots and freeze frame won't capture the delight of these moments. We'll try to work on the video function here for you one of these days....

Hurts so Good: Bryce and his first taste of ice cream

In spite of bad weather and depressing football...

the babies managed to entertain us all...even the frenchie and especially the grandparents.
