A New Holiday Tradition: Post-Christmas Bowling

A Few of E's Favorite Things: Day after Christmas at Oatland Island

Brunch and Beyond

Christmas Morning
Well, Christmas lived up to the hype this year for Miss Elsie. On Christmas morning, she awoke at a civilized hour and was excited to learn it had finally come. Daddy checked to make sure Santa had come, and we ventured forth to see if he had eaten his cookies, given the reindeer the carrots, and had read her letter. And he had! Only crumbs and stems were left! Elsie was delighted with the fancy firetruck from Grandpa Dave, Grandma Sharon, and Granny T. She was wowed by the guitar and Dora dollhouse from Santa. And she loved the Noah's Ark from Grammy and Poppa. It was clear, though, that the flashlight and the candy canes in her stocking were actually plenty of gifts... but she soon got the hang of the steady stream of presents demanding more to open and pouting when Mommy and Daddy stopped to open a few of their own. Since travel was out of the question with baby sister almost here, we managed a peaceful holiday at home with family on the phone and found here in spirit in wonderful gifts shipped from afar and wrapped under the tree.

well we finally did it. elsie decided that she'd muster up the courage to ask santa for some toys. we marched right into the mall (which is courageous in its own right) and headed straight to santa. fortunately santa had just returned from his 15 min. "feeding the reindeer"/smoke break so we were second in line leaving no time to decide that no toy was worth sitting in an old hairy guy's lap who smelled like moth balls, old spice aftershave, and wrigleys spearmint gum. we quickly chose the convenient photo package and placed elsie upon the old guy's knee. from right of stage dad prompted "tell santa what you want". a whispered toys and cookies was the reply to dad. great, "now tell that to santa". nervously elsie turned to santa and whispered what i assume was "toys and cookies". now it was mom's turn to get elsie to turn to the camera. snap. snap. and not a second too soon. "daddy, daddy get down please". as you can see elsie now has proof the she is a big girl, not afraid of men she really should be afraid of, and officially asked santa for holiday treats.
Reindeer Games

Yesterday, Camille came over for reindeer cookies and antler fun in Elsie's new playroom. Camille's grandmother Boo came along with Ginger and Camille, and she made quite an impression. Last night and this morning, Elsie has made a dozen "calls" to her on her baby cell phone asking Boo "how she slept" and "how was her weekend"--two of her favorite conversation starters.

Holiday Festive

As her mom and dad were determining what festive attire to don for a party Saturday night, Elsie shows that she has it all figured out.
Saturday Night
When David and I met, he had dreams of being a rock star, aspirations of being in a band, and toyed with names for the band or albums or song titles for years. That was as close as it got really, until now... He and Elsie kicked off their tour Saturday night complete with headgear and brooms. Their first hit is Elsie's tune "Naked Babies." Now if only Santa would bring them real guitars...

The Pug

Yes, he is still around--sweeter than ever, fit as fiddle, Elsie's "Oskey." He is a lot less obedient--and should be reeducated in a couple of areas, but so should we... He had a check up today and was declared a "perfect specimen" weighing in at a mean 21 pounds. Go pug! He, of course, would like to gain a few holiday lbs.

Ho Ho

Elsie talks a big game when it comes to Ho Ho. She wants to see him. She tells us she's gonna ask him for cookies for Christmas. She says she's gonna hug him. She even chased an off-duty Santa through the mall one evening. But then she gets face to face with the big guy and her wide eyes search for her parents in terror and she murmurs "mommy... daddy... mommy... daddy..." behind our knees. She has no problem with Frosty the Snowman, but the guy in red is better in the abstract at this point. We may actually check him out one more time next weekend, but we mostly enjoy him "up on the housetop" in verse, as the potential giver of cookies and a guitar (our xmas wish list items), or in our mind's eye--we talk a big game.

This one goes out to Leslie B...

Our friend Leslie Ballenger is a great horsewoman, but Elsie may soon be in competition. Check her out over Thanksgiving riding Romeo. She must have some of her great-grandmother's genes... What a big girl!
