Comfortbiddle

When I got home from work yesterday, Elsie and David were in our bed reading books. Elsie patted the bed next to her and ordered me to "Sit'here. Get comfortbiddle."

Where's Elsie?

Well, in the next posting, you'll see her at Camille's birthday party. It was the first party Elsie really "got." She helped pick out and wrap an Elmo boat for the tub for Camille. She was excited to watch Camille open it with a front row seat. She "got" that there was birthday cake, candles, and the "happy day to you" song. She was excited to see those things--she was expecting them. There were balloons and favors corresponding to the animal theme. And her friends Camille and Hart were there. And there was water--water toys--splashing. Elsie is everywhere, all over, full of it.

She is talking and laughing and playing and jumping. She sings all the time: "Old Donald had a dog," "Itsy Bitsy," "Twinkle Star," "Bushel Peck," "Patty Cake," and "I love Benji" to the tune of Frere Jacques in honor of Uncle Benji, lyrics by Daddy. She loves the alphabet and letters and spells her name, sometimes using a "y" if she is feeling especially kicky. She tries to write her name and will draw circles, but will not discuss colors--she especially likes the tops on her markers though. She likes to count--and will count along to ten when she's in timeout. She is very good at counting as a result. And she's almost two and she's acting like it--willful, stubborn, demanding. But she's also easily distractible. And she loves books: The Boynton books, _Wild Things_, _Olivia_, Eric Carle's _Head to Toe_, The _David_ books--she cried when David got in trouble in _David Gets in Trouble_. Any books really, but not book jackets--she'll say "Jacket off, paper off." And "tunes"--she loves music and has favorite songs--and favorite TV shows--like _Choo choo Thomas_. And yesterday she was tickled to tinkle on her potty, like a "big girl" she said. Yes, Elsie is becoming a big girl, that is exactly where she is.
Ketchup

Elsie loves ketchup. Actually, it isn't just ketchup--it's dipping. It's ranch too or syrup. She'll request a dip for just about anything she's eating whether appropriate or not. We are pretty sure it is a way for her to show off her mad fork skills. She is a whiz at poking then dipping.

But there is also some "catch up" for us to do, too. We have been remiss at blogging--I'd like to blame the heat. Or maybe I should blame the fact that Elaine has been gone for almost 8 weeks. But now there are no excuses--we have returned from celebrating Mom's birthday, visiting with Uncle Johnny and Aunt Kiki, my conference to Denver, David and Elsie's HHI vacation with Grammy, Poppa, and the Davis, and now we are back. Elaine is back--making her presence known with a flurry of laundry, too much cleaning, and most of all, the world's biggest smile and Nonie-dance from Elsie. With the first trimester out of the way, I'm feeling like myself. And David is planning to return to Savannah for employment--no more Statesboro commute. We're trying to see what our normal lives might be like... Yeah, right, I know.

Happy Birthday Grammy!

We asked Elsie what she wanted us to write in honor of her Grammy's birthday. Here is her message:

"Cake... candles... blow... Happy birthday to yoooooouuu... I ee you. (...I love you)"

Elsie loved spending Grammy's birthday with her this weekend at HHI. She also loved celebrating with Uncle Johnny, Aunt Kate, Donna, Joe, and the parrots at the Soggy Ball aka Salty Dog.

Taking Care of Elsie
Elaine has been sick--We are all missing Nonie. Her surgery had complications and she was in the hospital for five weeks. She is now at home recuperating and we hope to have her with us real soon! Elsie misses her and asks about Nonie all the time--calling her on her baby cell phone to say "Nonie. Wasssup?"

As a result, Mommy was home with Elsie for a few weeks--and we got to enjoy storytime at the library and the fountains at Hull Park together. After we went on vacation for a few weeks, the grandmothers stepped in. GranAnn came for a week to take care of Elsie, so I could start in my new position, and then Grammy came for a week to hold down the fort. Elsie loved having her grandmothers to visit--in spite of how many times, she used her favorite word "no." Every morning she asks about GranAnn and Grammy and says she misses them. We do too!

Thank you GranAnn! Thank you Grammy! We love you!
Getting Cozy

And the parade of houseguests continued. After the Habel Bachelders departed, we loved having Jim, Suzanne, and Duncan visit! And it was a special treat having Mike, Susan, Sutter, and Grace Ann join us as well. You'll see Elsie is a little suspicious of that orange Auburn jersey, but she still enjoyed playing her "getting cozy" game with a War Eagles fan.

The Girls of Summer
We were thrilled to have Jenn, Chris, Alice, and Claire join us for the 2nd annual HHI Beach Week. Elsie adored playing with "Awlice."She still talks about her. Smiley Claire seemed to have a very special relationship with Oscar! And as always, David and I managed to laugh and laugh with Jenn and Chris through the joys and agonies of parenting!
