model child

We were on our way to friends for dinner the other night and were running a bit early. (Strangely, after almost four years of parenting, our clocks are still off--we are either early or later, never on time!) Anyway, we snapped a few shots of the girls... Here are Elsie's...
Baby Bonnet

We came across this hat when cleaning out the garage this weekend. She refused to wear it then but will wear it ironically now.

Anticipation

If you come to visit us, you will see two little eyes watching for you from the mail slot. When we talk about company coming, Kit grabs her little stool and runs to the front door to peek out awaiting for what is to come. Sometimes I get these flashes and wonder what it is like to be Kit, toted places whose destinations she is not privy, on her way to events that are always a surprise. Since she doesn't know what we are talking about, she often doesn't know what is next--like driving in the dark or attending constant surprise parties. But more and more, she is getting what we say, and now, she knows when company is coming. So come on over and look for the little eyes watching and waiting for you!

Our Friend Sabrina Simmons

As many of you know, for years we have treasured our friend and personal family photographer Sabrina Simmons. While we have known her for years as a friend, upon Elsie's birth, we contracted her to chronicle Elsie's first year at 3, 6, and 12 months and then her again at 2 and 3. When Kit came along, she came to honor her 6 and 12 month birthdays with family photos and we have used these around our house and in Christmas cards as treasured memories of special days and milestones. And they can be found on this blog here and here among other places.
Sabrina collaborated with us on these treasured pictures, planning locations and coaxing children, soothing infants and eliciting smiles. She delighted with us in great shots and was patient about getting new ones. Most of all, she loved our babies, our girls. She knew all about girls with her own Savannah and Mary, also two years and three months apart, now 9 and 11.
So, it is with such heartbroken sadness that we mourn Sabrina's loss. She died last Saturday at the age of 39 in a tragic car accident leaving her husband Jack, also a dear friend and colleague of mine, and those two young girls. While her obituary and this article celebrated Sabrina's talents and accomplishments, it is her kindness, her voice, laughter, wise counsel on the ways of girls, and calming presence that we also mark, mourn, and will forever miss.
